Chief Estimator

This critical position confers with upper management, customers and project managers.  This proactive person is responsible for evaluating bid opportunities, reviewing bid specifications and drawings, ensuring that we know everything required to successfully bid and win the project.  The person must aggressively follow-up with contractors from bid request to final award and he/she will work with the Project Management team to follow-up on bid accuracy from hand-off through project completion.  Chief Estimator must train and supervise apprentice estimators, ensure consistent processes and procedures while estimating projects.


Opportunity Assessment and Bid Management

  • Respond to all requests, inquiries and correspondence with 24 hours
  • Determine bid due date, award date, completion date, competition and decision maker prior to pricing
  • Enter all information into pre-bid assessment software
  • Solicits information and maintains contact with customers
  • Ask questions regarding grade expectations and verify schedule fit and feasibility for the company
  • Attend prebid meetings

Project Knowledge

  • Analyze drawings and bid documents to prepare time, cost, materials and labor estimates
  • Review bid requirements thoroughly and asks follow-up question on every bid
  • Develop RFI’s and clarifications
  • Collaborate with production, project management, architects and general contractor to understand scope resolve issues and identify value engineering opportunities

Prepare and Submit Bids

  • Download drawings, set up files, perform take-off and price
  • Source, obtain and organize prices for special materials
  • Document discrepancies within drawings and list all assumptions
  • Generate bid package (including letter, scope, pricing, assumptions and requirements) and fill out bid qualifications and bid forms
  • Always review bid package with Bid Review Team prior to submittal.  Double-check all critical work deliverables to minimize mistakes.
  • Submits ALL bids and budgets by the bid deadline, even if that means working extra hours and learning with others

Follow Up and Closing

  • Knows key players including: architects, construction managers, property managers, developers
  • Proactively follow-up with general contractor to clarify scope differences, answer questions and get feedback on submitted bids and budgets
  • Obtain bid tally on all job bids

Project Handoff

  • Properly turns over bid documents and sub buyout information to project management in a timely manner
  • Review drawings with project management team and highlight areas of concern
  • Review job cost with project management team and highlight any subs/material vendors that still need to be awarded
  • Complete project kick-off form to ensure compliance


  • 5+ years’ experience estimating, preferably casework, millwork, metal, glass, stone and non-traditional materials
  • Advanced computer skills.  Must have strong knowledge of AutoCAD, Excel, Work and Outlook.  Must know learn On Screen Takeoff (OST), Micro Vellum and/or BIM knowledge a plus
  • Candidate able to set up estimating standards, procedures and train others will be considered first
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiprojects while meeting deliverable deadlines and budgets while maintaining exceptional quality control
  • Minimal travel required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Accounting, Business or Mathematics related strongly preferred.
